Acidic Volcanic Lakes

Volcanic Lake Taal

The WWW.VOLCANOLAKES.COM website describes the development, manufacture and testing of a system for measuring radon concentrations and background radiation level at the bottom of acidicvolcanic lakes, and wireless transmission of radon concentration data from the depths of lakes to a shore station.

A brief description of the problem of measuring radon gas and the level of radioactive background at the bottom of an acidic volcanic lake.

Volcanic lake Kawah Ijen
.

The lake is sulfate-chloride in composition and has a high acidity. The lake has a low ph level that does not exceed a value of 0.2. The temperature of the nearby hydrothermal vents and the lake itself is 170-245 °C (boiling point of a mixture of sulfurous and hydrochloric acid). The temperature on the surface is 50-60°C.
