VOGRIPA
(Volcanic Global Risk Identification and Analysis Project) aims to
provide systematic information on global volcanic activity, hazards and
vulnerability that can be analysed to identify locations at high risk
from volcanism and gaps in knowledge about hazards and risk. This will
facilitate risk assessments at specific locations worldwide and will
enable systematic analysis of global volcanic hazards data. The VOGRIPA
project will also develop new approaches to volcanic risk assessment
and volcanic crisis management. For more information about the project

The
chemical and physical evolution of rocks and minerals, particularly
igneous and metamorphic rocks, falls under the purview of the
Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology Section. Because of the
Section’s interest in studying and mitigating the hazards of volcanoes,
its work has a direct bearing on public safety and the preservation of
life.
Research
topics that dominate the Section include isotope and trace element
geochemistry, the origin of igneous rocks, metamorphism, volcanology,
magma dynamics, and new geochemical methods of research. Though the
research interests of VGP members are diverse, they strive to solve
cross-disciplinary problems within an effective framework and to make
the results of that research widely available.

WOVOdat is
a comprehensive global database on volcanic unrest aimed at
understanding pre-eruptive processes and improving eruption forecasts.

Observatories) and presently hosted at the Earth Observatory of
Singapore. |

The
2014 Mt. Ontake Eruption was the worst volcano disaster in postwar
Japan, claiming many lives. It resulted in the establishment of this
center, which functions as a hub for volcano disaster forecasting
research and conducts initiatives that could be described as a “general
hospital” for volcanoes. In addition to constricting a platform for
unifying volcano observation data, the center also promotes research
and development for observation/prediction/countermeasure technologies
through close linkages with related organizations. It also focuses on
cultivating the next generation of researchers, as there is a shortage
of volcano experts in Japan. |

Journal
of Applied Volcanology is
an international journal with a focus on applied research relating to
volcanism and particularly its societal impacts. Characterising
volcanic risk relies on not only quantifying physical threat but also
understanding social and physical vulnerability and resilience. The
broad aim of volcanologists in this domain is to increase public
resilience to volcanic risk via research that reduces human fatalities,
and volcanic impacts on livelihoods, infrastructure, and the economy. Journal
of Applied Volcanology fills
an important gap for scientists who want to publish research that
addresses this aim and wish to reach a broad audience. |

| Collaboration
Center for Earthquake and Volcano Research |
The
Council for Advancing Earthquake and Volcano Research (CAEVR) was
established within ERI with the aim of managing the “Earthquake and
Volcano Hazards Observation and Research Program,” a large MEXT-funded
project to mitigate earthquake and volcanic disasters via advanced
monitoring and prediction approaches. The Planning Committee was
installed under CAEVR to manage the planning and implementation of
research programs in cooperation with universities and national
research agencies across Japan. The Planning Committee consists of the
Promotion Office and Strategy Office. The members of the Promotion
Office include all of the researchers at the Collaboration Center for
Earthquake and Volcano Research, researchers at other ERI centers, and
visiting professors. One of the members of the Collaboration Center is
a rotating member from a university outside of the University of Tokyo
to ensure that the other participating institutions in the program are
involved in the management of the Planning Committee; this position is
rotated every two years or so. Researchers from other universities are
members of the Strategy Office to ensure a world-renowned, integrated
research program through stronger coordination and collaboration among
the many research topics investigated by member universities and
organizations. |

Volcano Active Foundation is a non profit foundation whose main goals
are to support scientific research, development and dissemination of
the results on the activity of volcanoes and their risks at a global
scale, mitigation of volcanic hazards and support to increase their
knowledge through social projects. |
